Shell Head, photos taken by Ben Draper and Katie Harris-MacLeod, 2021-24.
Shell Head was born from a wee studio on the shores of Lake Weyba, Kabi Kabi Country. She was part of a series of performance works that responded to the lake for Floating Land in 2021. At the conclusion of the performance works, I began to wonder how I could further use and conceptualise Shell Head, as I had grown quite attached to her. So, I began to take her to different locations and photographed her in the landscape. To me, Shell Head is a 'Goddess' of feminist art, turning a mirror on the murky waters of female self-representation, symbolic and ambiguous in meaning. At the same time experimental, surreal, playful and spiritual, Shell Head explores her relationship to her human/ non-human body, to water body, to tree body and to geological body. Connection to place and feminine response are influential themes but the landscape inevitably has the final say, directing the mood through the elements - wind, rain and light. This artwork does not intend to be explicitly suggestive of the above interpretations, ultimately the audience curates their own experience and response to the work.
